Hello. Nice site. My GGG Grandfather was an POW here. His name was Alfred Conway McDaniel. He was also from NC. He was Co. F, 42nd Regiment, and was also an Private. If anyone has any information on how I can get more info on this camp, or how I can enter my Grandfather in the database please let me know. Thanks, Ken

Thank you so very much for your informative, sobering site. One doesn't think sometimes what hardships, and torture our ancestors were subjected to. I was looking for Samuel A. Paxton from Rockbrige, VA and found him among your listings of POWS buried in the mass grave, but not listed on the monument. How sad.

Thank you all so much for the hard work it has taken to bring this tragic part of history to us. I have visited Point Lookout twice and it leaves me with a feeling of gratitude for the brave soldiers that were kept behind the walls of freedom. The supreme sacrifice was made by so many in its compound it makes you wonder how any survived. Your organization is paying a beautiful tribute to the tragedies and triump. My great, great grandfather was released after the war. He had been captured at Hatchers Run VA on April 2,1865 just a week before Lee surrended. Thank God he was there less than 12 weeks. I will submit his records and story to your organization. Penny Baisden

My ancestor Joseph Harrell and his son both fought at Gettysburg. Joseph was shot in the leg at Gettysburg and died at Point Lookout Prison, refusing to sign allegiance to the Union. His son survived and returned home to Eure,NC where the family still lives. Josiah Harrell (revolutionary war veteran) is buried one-half mile from my home in Eure. Go to Yahoo Images and type Harrell for a photo of the gravesite.

My 2nd great grandfather Elisha Dove and his brother Booker were both there. Elisha was exchanged just a couple of months prior to his brother's arrival. Booker died there soon after capture according to his records. Somehow Elisha survived, which to me is truly amazing considering the following:
Enlistment Date: 23 September 1863
POW: 31 December 1863 at Greenville, VA
Confined: 05 January 1864 at Point Lookout, MD (Estimated day)
Exchanged: 24 February 1865
I'm so dissappointed in how little the war record reveals. Much more data was kept on Union soldiers. He then had to survive the trip on on foot to Virginia. It is truly amazing to me.
Booker's information
Enlistment Date: 24 September 1864
POW: on 01 April 1865 at Five Forks, VA
Confined on 03 April 1865 at City Point, VA
Confined: on 06 April 1865 at Point Lookout, MD
Died of disease while a POW Company I, 53rd Infantry Regiment Virginia: on 03 May 1865 in Point Lookout, MD
He is buried there somewhere.

Hello, When I received my great grand father's war records from NAR and read he was a POW chills ran up my spine. I can't do anything now but honor him for his time in the War. He enlisted 1861, was wounded 2x, captured, exchanged and then paroled at Appomattox Court House April 9, 1865. I wish I had his picture or any personal war facts to share but I don't.

I too am a son of confederate ancestors who believed in peace and freedom from big northern tyranny. Now looking at our country, I see the destruction of all our veterans fought for. very sad.All real americans should cherish our history and especially my confederate bretheren who gave the ultimate for defending freedom and our lord.

Hello, my great granduncle was imprisoned in Point Lookout. Amazingly enough, I live in Great Mills, Maryland, no more than 20 miles north of the POW location.
Here's what I know about my granduncle:
It is shown by the records of this office that J. GRISBY SESSIONS (name not found as John G. Sessions), private and corporal, 2nd Company C, 6th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (not found as of the 9th Regiment), Confederate States Army, was enlisted April 17, 1862, at Yorktown, Virginia, to serve two years or during the war; that he was captured October 11, 1864, at Petersburg, and that he was paroled and transferred for exchange at Point Lookout, Maryland, January 17, 1865. He was exchanged at Boulware's Wharf, James River, Virginia, January 21, 1865. No later record of him has been found. Very Respectfully, R.________________, The Adjutant General (Handwritten note: John Grisby Sessions was the same. by Geo. W. Newton,

Just learned of your website though local SCV chapter.
My great-great grandfather was interred at Point Lookout at the end of the war after being captured in Virginia. This is attested to in his pension application, but he is not listed in your name listing. His name was Robert L Clarke.

My greatgrandfather was a prisoner here according to my grandmother. She has
indicated he (James (John) T. Amos)
was released in October 1865. Apparently
he was captured at Spotsylvania and served in D Company of the 45th NC.

My Great Grandfather, William Ryder, was born in Liverpool, England in 1819 and came to Georgia when he was about 13 years old. He enlisted in the 6th Georgia Militia the first year of the War and later served in the 14th Battalion (State Guards) and was also in the 7th Georgia Militia. He was in the battles around Atlanta and Griswoldville. He was captured at Johnson Station, Liberty County, GA 4 December 1864 and taken to Point Lookout, Maryland. He was released 17 June 1865. He taught school in the prison and was acting bookkeeper (he was a school teacher in private life). He was one of the last prisoners to be released.

I have to question an organisation that charges $20.00 PER YEAR to someone that is helping to build thier Database of POW's. I also do not like the comment about "Ethnic CLeansing" at Point Lookout. It shows a basic lack of understanding of the reasons behind the actions of those who served time at and those who pulled duty at any POW Camp whether North or South. Afraid I wont be able to join this group.
